About Breezin’ Thru

We Bring Out the Music in You
We believe that everyone has music in them.

But we also know that there are two very important issues holding kids back: the learning of music fundamentals (literacy) and having them experience the thrill of creating their own music (creativity). So that’s what motivated us to create Breezin’ Thru Theory & Breezin’ Thru Composing. However as music educators, we also realized that the “how” this is delivered is just as important as the “what”. So that’s why everything we do at Breezin’ Thru is around making learning fun, accessible and saving teachers’ time.  So we can indeed, bring out the music in you!

Our Musical Journey

It all started in 2007 with a simple request by a music educator at a local high school, asking for a more engaging and effective music theory resource that he could use in his brand new Mac lab. As a classroom music educator for many years, Jean McKen could certainly relate. So with her combined passions for music education, technology and engaging kids with 21st century learning tools, Breezin’ Thru was born.

It’s been constant year-after-year innovation ever since, making things as engaging and as effortless as possible for music educators to instil a love of music in their students. From the first interactive e-binder to the exciting new Breezin’ Thru Composing app; from drills to dashboards and now making Breezin’ Thru accessible, anywhere, anytime, and on any device. Woohoo!

Jean McKen
Author & Co-Founder

Jean McKen, B.Mus, B.Ed, M.S.(MusicTechnology), is a former classroom music teacher who has built many successful band, choral, orchestra and music technology programs ranging from 4th grade through to the university level.

She began using music technology early on to compose and to create engaging resources for her students. She always recognized the need for a scaffolded resource that would close the gaps students had when learning music theory and make meaningful connections to composition, while lightening the load for teachers.

Jean is also an award-winning composer, having won the Canadian Music Educator’s Association 50th anniversary song prize for “I Am Song, Je Suis Chanson.”

Nancy Helstab
President & Co-Founder

Nancy Helstab brings a complementary skill set to Breezin’ Thru: an unwavering eye for beautiful and intuitive design and outstanding customer experiences. (And when it comes to kids and learning, you can count on Nancy to bring the fun into the equation.)

With a background in business, Nancy has years of experience as a consumer needs specialist and meaningful product innovation. She is responsible for overseeing our team – including product development, customer support and managing day-to-day operations. Nancy studied piano for many years in her youth and was also the church organist. She credits Breezin’ Thru for reigniting her love for music and taking it to a whole new, creative level!
